Ex-Crawley Town defender Webber is special guest for the Bristol City game

We welcome Damian Webber as special guest of the Former Players Association this Saturday for the game against Bristol City.

Damian initially joined us from Worthing in the summer of 1989, having previously been with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Regarded as probably the classiest Reds defender of his era, he was equally at home at right back or centre half, or even in midfield, but in that first season he was used as a striker for some spells and responded with 20 league and cup goals, including one in the 1990 Sussex Senior Cup Final as we won the trophy for the first time.  He was a key man the following season, this time back in a more familiar role, as the Senior Cup was retained.

1991-92 was to prove another significant year for him as he was a part of the side that reached the second and third rounds of the FA Cup for the first time in our history.  Furthermore, when our battle to avoid relegation reached the business end he was again pushed into action as a striker, once more delivering the goods with goals in crucial away wins at

Waterlooville and Dorchester.

After a knee injury affected his 1993-94 campaign Damian left the club, initially for Bognor Regis but then got an opportunity back in the Football League with Millwall, for whom he made 76 appearances before injury caused him to retire from the professional game. There was still time for a return to Crawley, though, as in August 1999 he was a much needed wise head in Cliff Cant's young and inexperienced side.  He left in October of that year.

In total, Damian played 210 matches, scoring 34 goals.

We hope Reds' fans will give him a warm reception at half-time on Saturday when he is introduced on the pitch.
